Testing the Canon 100mm L Macro…

without comments

A few weeks ago I was able to get a Canon 100mm L Macro lens as a “loaner” from the local camera shop…

I took a spin with it here in Turku and ended up to the Luostarinmäki handicrafts museum.

The first photo isn’t a macro at all, but as I found, this lens is quite versatile. The maximum aperture is 2.8 and it has a 4 stop hybrid IS – system.

This is where this lens really shines. Closeups and macro shots.

You can see the incredibly shallow DOF as the further edge of this nail is already out of focus.

But as I stated before, it isn’t necessarily a macro only lens, actually far from it.

One thing is for sure though, the lens is tack sharp (unless fudged by the photographer :D).

It can also be used as a portrait lens. Maybe not for full body shots, but it should handle headshots & 2/3rd shots quite well.

One other thing I noticed right away was that the lens produces really nice colors and contrast.

It also produces pleasing bokeh and being a short telephoto it also gives a good chance to control the depth of field quite nicely (even on the cropped 7D).

The museum has really intriguing subjects for photography, so highly recommended to anyone residing in or coming to Turku.

There’s also a lot of worn wood surfaces which I really like to photograph, from far and near.

These old street lamps were unfortunately converted to work with electric bulbs, but they were still quite nice subjects.

In some rooms it was really dark and I found that even the new hybrid IS – system couldn’t save the situation.

This photo looks sharp enough here, but zoomed to 100% it’s definitely not sharp.

There are a lot of really old hand-painted signs.

And interesting window designs…

The last room I visited this trip belonged to a potter (has nothing to do with weed or magic btw. ;)).

All in all I found the lens to be a solid performer and I should get one for myself this week.

Getting one wasn’t decided based on this testing, but it certainly did reinforce my decision.

As always, click the landscape shots bigger (you’ll have to click twice), the portraits are already as big as they get.

Stay tuned for a full frame camera test results…
